We started this journey dreaming about places.
The mountains. The oceans. The roads we had never driven. The countries we had never seen.
What we didn’t fully understand was how much of this adventure would become about people.
Some have welcomed us into their homes. Some have shared a meal, a campsite, a tool, a piece of advice or a story. Some helped us when something went wrong. Others simply crossed our path at exactly the right moment.
Some we knew for years.
Others we met for only a few hours.
And then there are the fellow overlanders — travelers from around the world whose journeys, experiences and willingness to share what they’ve learned have inspired us along the way.
These are the people who remind us that sometimes the most meaningful part of travel isn’t where you go — it’s who you meet along the way.
A conversation beside the road. An invitation into someone’s home. Help when YOLA needed it. A meal shared with someone we had just met.
Again and again, people have shown us extraordinary kindness, generosity and curiosity.
Some encounters became friendships. Others lasted only long enough to share a story.
All of them left something behind.
One of the unexpected joys of this journey has been meeting other people who understand why anyone would choose to pack their life into a vehicle and head toward somewhere they’ve never been.
Around campsites, parking lots, breweries, border crossings and roadsides, we’ve traded route ideas, mechanical advice, favorite camps, warnings, stories and plenty of laughs.
And that’s exactly what makes this community so interesting.
