Thrift Store Treasures & a Little YOLA Curiosity

Sometimes the most memorable stops begin with something as simple as wandering into a little shop.

While exploring Dawson Creek, British Columbia, we discovered B&B’s Thrift and Vintage — and behind the counter was Jackie, the heart and soul of the place.

Her shop was filled with treasures, the kind of place where you could easily lose track of time browsing shelves and wondering what stories all those things might tell.

Of course, traveling around the world in a 4Runner comes with one very important rule:

If something comes into YOLA, we have to figure out where on earth we’re going to put it.

So as tempting as all those treasures were, restraint was necessary.

We managed to leave with just a few favorite DVDs to add to our little traveling movie collection.

But what we really carried away from Jackie’s shop had nothing to do with what we bought.

As we talked, Jackie became genuinely interested in our journey and began sharing our story with some of her customers.

Before long, curiosity spilled outside.

People gathered around YOLA, wanting to see the 4Runner that two retired travelers were calling home while attempting to make their way around the world.

“Sometimes the best souvenir isn’t something you buy. It’s the memory of how someone made you feel.”

What began as a quick stop at a thrift store became another one of those unexpected little moments we never could have planned.

Jackie, thank you. Thank you for your warmth, your enthusiasm and for being so excited about our adventure that you wanted to share it with the people around you.

We may have walked into B&B’s looking for a few treasures.

We walked out with some DVDs, a few more people knowing YOLA’s story and another reminder of what continues to make this journey so special.

The things we collect may eventually get left behind. The kindness, curiosity and connections we collect along the way travel with us.
