Long before YOLA began making her way around the world, there were travelers whose journeys helped us imagine what our own adventure could become.
Scott Brady was one of those people.
As the founder of Expedition Portal and Executive Publisher of the Overland Collective, home to Overland Journal, Scott has spent years exploring the world and sharing knowledge and stories with the overlanding community.
Through his exploration, writing and work within that community, Scott helped us see that overlanding was about far more than simply driving from one destination to another.
It was about preparation, self-reliance, curiosity and taking the time to understand the places and cultures you travel through.
His example helped shape the way we began thinking about our own journey: not as a vacation, but as a way of life.
That made finally meeting Scott at an Overland Expo near Los Angeles especially meaningful to us.
We had followed his adventures and learned from the knowledge he and the overlanding community had shared. Suddenly, there we were talking with someone whose work had been part of our own inspiration to get out and explore the world.
And then came an unexpected gesture. Scott gave us a copy of *Overland Journal*. It may have been a magazine, but to us it represented something much bigger.
One of the things we have always appreciated about Scott’s approach to overlanding is the reminder that adventure isn’t simply about accumulating expensive gear or building the ultimate vehicle.
The vehicle and preparation matter, of course. But ultimately, you still have to be willing to leave what is familiar, accept some uncertainty and go explore.
Scott, thank you for the inspiration, for everything you have contributed to the overlanding community and for that unexpected copy of Overland Journal.
Meeting you was a special moment for two people who were preparing to take on a very big dream of their own.
Sometimes the people who inspire your journey never realize just how far their influence will travel.
