Sometimes you stop somewhere because it looks interesting. Then you meet someone who helps you understand just how extraordinary the place really is.

While visiting the McAbee Fossil Beds near Cache Creek, British Columbia, we had the pleasure of meeting a local guide who took the time to explain the fascinating history of the area.

Suddenly, we weren’t simply looking at rocks. We were looking into a world that existed millions of years ago.

Our guide explained the significance of the fossils found in the area and how they offer a glimpse into ancient life and what this part of British Columbia looked like long before YOLA — or any of us — came rolling through.

You can drive into a place, take a photograph and leave. Or you can stop, ask questions and listen to someone who knows its story. Suddenly, you see that place completely differently.
