The First 30 Days on the Road: When a Dream Becomes Your Life

When a Dream Becomes Your Life

There’s a moment when a dream stops being a dream and becomes your life.

For us, that happened the moment we pulled out of our driveway in YOLA, our 2008 Toyota 4Runner, and finally pointed her toward the open road.

Now, one month in, we’re beginning to understand something we couldn’t fully appreciate before we left:

“This isn’t a vacation. This is our life now.”

And we’re learning how to live it one day—and one mile—at a time.

Learning to Live With Less

Although, here’s the funny part: it took us nine days to actually camp!
For two people setting off to travel the world with a rooftop tent, we didn’t exactly rush into sleeping in it.

During those first nine days, we were fortunate to stay with friends along the way—reconnecting, sharing meals, telling stories, and enjoying their incredible hospitality.

Looking back, it was actually a pretty wonderful way to ease into this new life.

The lesson?

If you’re planning a major life transition, start much earlier than you think you need to.
